After photographing a number of weddings and seeing Shelby’s creations in action, we just had to get in touch to showcase her work here on our blog. The dessert are as tasty as they are beautiful, and the owner as creative as she is hardworking – a perfect recipe for a blooming business. Feast your eyes on today’s spotlight Shelby’s Sweet Shoppe!
I‘ve loved baking from the time I was a toddler – my mom has a home video of me mixing up batter with a soother in my mouth! I began making birthday cakes for friends as a hobby while I was in high school, and that’s when I began experimenting with different styles and techniques. From there, I started to get more and more requests for cakes from family and friends. After graduating, I continued honing my skills as a baker, and eventually I enrolled in St. Clair’s culinary arts program. It was at this time that I decided to start my own bake shoppe and really dedicate myself to my passion. I’ve never looked back!
I’ve been baking seriously for about 3 years now, which has given me the opportunity to really discover my personal style when it comes to baking. If I had to describe it in three words I’d say elegant, modern, and clean. I think when done properly, baked goods are beautiful little pieces of art on their own, and they shouldn’t need much additional decoration; so often I see desserts that have way too much going on! I like to focus on perfecting each element of a dessert, such as a frosting technique on a cake, so that the essential parts of the dessert are what make it beautiful.
One thing I offer that I feel is exclusive to my business is dessert tables that really end up being a showpiece at events. I work with clients individually to determine the style of their event and a coordinating menu. From there, I create a table of desserts that matches their colours and theme. On the day of the event, I set up the desserts and decor of the table, so that all they need to do is show up and enjoy! In addition, I think the thought and passion I put into each client’s event is pretty special. I truly get excited every time to create something special and personal for each order.
Every time I finish setting up a dessert table for an event, especially weddings, I am reminded of why I love to do this. Seeing the finished product come together, and the way my desserts are able to become a part of the event, and make it even more beautiful always makes me so happy. Additionally, I worked on both of the weddings featured in the Windsor Star’s wedding special this past year. Seeing my business’ name in print, alongside photos of these gorgeous weddings, was a huge moment for me!
During the initial consultation we will go over basic information, design, flavours, and pricing. A tasting is included in the first consultation, this allows couples to taste my product and see if they enjoy it. I then provide you with a rough estimate of your order and go over the final details. Be prepared to make a deposit to hold your order at this time or very soon after. Please come prepared with a few pictures and questions to help me customize your order for your big day. We want to make sure that everything is perfect!
Mini desserts! How could you not love them? They’re tiny, cute, and the perfect excuse to be able to sample more *wink*. When it comes to dessert tables I have found that brides are wanting to serve an assortment of mini desserts, giving their guests options. This is why I love this particular trend, it gives you more to personalize. Each dessert table I do is different, no matter the theme, because each bride brings something of their own. Whether it be their favourite childhood pie, a slice of cake from their first date, or simply their initials on a dessert, it’s something that represents them as a couple.
“Naked cakes.” Most admired by vintage or rustic loving brides. Naked cakes reveal all the inner layers of this delectable dessert, without all of the outer frosting. A perfect choice for brides who aren’t crazy about fondant (or a lot of icing, for that matter). This style of cake actually takes on a whole new look of it’s own, one that makes the delicious details that much more important!
1. Look for quality. Pre-order desserts that you are interested in, it’s always best to taste test!
2. Going with the cheapest price does not guarantee you will be happy. Generally speaking you usually get what you pay for.
3. Ask around. Word of mouth is huge with a small business, if something doesn’t taste good or someone has had a bad experience… you’re going to hear about it. Likewise my clients are my best advertising. And don’t be afraid to ask for references.
